Compared to other joining techniques soldering is a technique with a number of specific advantages. A number of important advantages:

  • Design freedom. For example, no sight line is needed (like with welding) and full surfaces can be joint.
  • Good conduction between materials (electrical and thermal).
  • Very high strength possible (also due to surface bonding).
  • Very good leak tightness by capillary action (solder flows into crevices).
  • Thin/thick joints or compositions of different materials are possible.
  • To be combined with other thermal processes (eg. annealing, hardening, thermal cleaning).

Therefore, you will find solder joints in many products and in almost all industries.
